Community Build Playspace Partnership

KaBOOM! playgrounds and skateparks are built by Funding Partner volunteers and community residents working side by side. On a KaBOOM! Build Day, these volunteers begin on an empty lot and end the day having constructed a new and safe playground or skatepark. Very simple. Very amazing.

For each project, KaBOOM! works with our Funding Partners to identify and support a Community Partner (a child-serving nonprofit) in the community of their choice for the project and provides full-service project management. A Funding Partner contributes a tax-deductible financial gift and its team's expertise and building labor. For many organizations, the day is the one of the best activities they've ever executed to improve professional relationships among employees and to strengthen community relations. Oh—did we mention that if you develop a KaBOOM! partnership, this new amazing playspace is built, with your help, in only 6 hours?

KaBOOM! has built over 1,400 playgrounds through these public/private partnerships across the entire country. Additionally, KaBOOM! has instituted a specific initiative through the end of 2008 called Operation Playground. Through the financial and volunteer support of various corporate funders, Operation Playground intends to rebuild 100 playspaces lost during Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. KaBOOM! has worked with organizations based in the Gulf as well as those based elsewhere and continues to seek supporters of this worthwhile intiative.

  • Additionally, The Home Depot has supported grant programs and trainings to teach communities across the country how to build great places to play using the KaBOOM! model and their own leadership

Fannie Mae
Build Day Blitz

On Feb. 13, 2007, Fannie Mae brought over 1000 employees together for an organization-wide conference, held in New Orleans.

Fannie Mae has been sending volunteer teams to the Gulf Coast throughout 2006 and expanded this Gulf Coast Relief program in 2007. To kick off 2007 efforts in a big way, Fannie Mae involved all 1000 conference attendees in a massive day of playground building!
  • Right in the middle of their three-day meeting, the team completed SIX playgrounds – five standard-sized projects and one giant signature build – in ONE day, at elementary schools all over the city of New Orleans!
  • To really blow this project out of the water, Fannie Mae added additional budget dollars to capture the power of the project and to spread the word to its constituents. As part of this six-build project, KaBOOM! led the charge in securing and overseeing on-site build-day photographers, specialized public relations outreach and co-branded banners for each of their six sites.

Authentic Teen Focused

With the media excitement, the appeal of skate culture’s fashions, and the sheer thrill of the sport, skateboarding has become today’s fastest growing sport for youth 8 to 15 years old. Youth have mastered ollies and vert ramp arials - now their biggest challenge is….finding a place to skate! American Eagle Outfitters and KaBOOM! brought skateparks to American teens through AE RIDE.
  • Employee volunteers work alongside boarders, bikers and bladers and their families to lead local skatepark builds in their top markets with KaBOOM!.
  • AE sponsored a national skatepark challenge grant program.
  • In-store promotion to spotlight a teen hero who advocated and raised funds to build a skatepark with AE support.

Armstrong.jpg Armstrong
Rewarding Employees

Since 2001, we have worked closely with Armstrong World Industries to build 15 playspaces in communities where Armstrong employees live and work. Said CEO Michael Lockhart: “The only thing better than watching the children catch their first glimpse of the playground was seeing the spirited team building among our people. You could feel the camaraderie; everyone was participating equally; and the result is a great gift to the community.”
  • Armstrong created a signature team building event to kick off their annual meeting as well as their relationship with KaBOOM!
  • Armstrong has also awarded KaBOOM! playspaces to local manufacturing plants that exceeded safety standards and/or have met other goals determined by the corporate office.
  • In 2006, Armstrong and KaBOOM! were awarded Corporate Business of the Year by the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy for their contributions to local kids.

CaliforniaVolunteers:
Large-Scale Values-Based Partnership

KaBOOM! worked with youth-serving organizations and youth and adult volunteers to celebrate Cesar Chavez Day of Service & Learning with a state-wide program on or near Mar. 31, 2007 that:
  • Engaged 3,000 volunteers in 10 cities in high-profile service projects that bring to life the legacy and universal values of civil rights leader Cesar Chavez.
  • Developed in youth volunteers the core values and commitment to community that Chavez espoused through their service experiences on these projects.
  • Built “living legacies” to Chavez through the creation of great places to play that are designed by children, built by community volunteers. These playgrounds will be community gathering places where more than 100,000 children will leap, laugh and learn for the next 20 years.
  • On each of these builds, large-scale custom murals were painted by volunteers, celebrating Cesar Chavez’ core teachings
  • A signature service learning curriculum was also developed for use on all Design Days, teaching children the value of community service.
  • First Lady of California Maria Shriver supported the program throughout the planning and execution and also volunteered on the kick-off project!
  • Significant local electronic media supported the program as well as online support at http://www.csc.ca.gov/ccd/playgrounds.asp and kaboom.org

Allergan
Conference Related Projects

Allergan had interest in performing a community service project in conjunction with their Leadership Conference – requesting only that the site be near a major U.S. airport hub In 2006,

KaBOOM! partnered Allergan with a center for developmentally-challenged children in Queens, N.Y. They loved their first experience so much that in 2007, they completed two additional conference-related builds – one outside of Boston, the other in New Orleans!

Here is what the Allergan leaders had to say:

What was the best part of your recent KaBOOM! experience?
  • The CAUSE, followed by time with my peers to bring it to life Working alongside team members, getting to know one another – laughing and doing good work! Seeing the transformation… was incredibly satisfying. Teamwork and knowing there’s a need and you are fulfilling that It emphasized the importance of reaching out to the community from within the organization. Allows us to work in an environment other than that of which we normally would with our peers. They want to give back as well!
