Playful city application question

When measuring a playspace (width and length) do we include the seating area,  bleachers, etc. or just the field itself?

A great question, and very helpful for other communities who are beginning the playspace audit process as part of their Playful City USA application.  Hopefully you have read the following response on another forum:

"I consider a playspace as being inclusive of all amenities surrounding the main playing area, be it a playground or a field.  Bleachers should be included as part of the entire playspace when discussing the value of the entire area."

I think this a helpful rule of thumb.  Short of the sidewalks and curbs, what someone may see as a linear soccer field with clear boundries lined with white chalk, others may use for different games with different boundries. 

Mjohn17 - once you've uploaded the playspace in question, would you mind posting a link to the playspace finder here?  It would be fun for us all to see the field and the fruits of your hard work.

I have another application-related question  As I understand it, this year there is an April 1st early application deadline to apply to become a Playful City USA, but the regular deadline is May 15.  The benefit for early applications is that they will be reviewed and we'll have a chance to improve if necessary.  My question is whether or not there is a window of time where we can submit for early review, or if April 1st is it?

April 1st is it!  This gives our national reviewers time to work with those cities that have made the early deadline, and it gives the cities time to make any necessary changes or gather additional imformation and support!

Ben,

I have several questions.

As far as the April 1st deadline, is it a postmark or in your hands deadline?

Can we submit part of the application to be reviewed. Ex. Can I submit it now with only the mayoral appointee's signature and then the Mayor to sign off later on the final version?

Also I have the draft of the proclamation.  The standard procedure is for the mayor and council to announce the proclamation at the council meeting during the week of the event date.  Then they provide a signed copy to us. 

My main concern is having someone review the action plan and the play day schedule.

Any application Postmarked by April 1st will be reviewed by the National Review Team, and the applicant community will be given feedback on how to improve their application before the May 15 deadline. 

It will be important for all communities to submit a signed application and a signed proclimation for it to be considered complete on May 15th.  (We understand that Play Day events may be held in the summer and fall, but it will be important to announce them so that you can begin building momentum)

I was referring to the April 1 deadline only for the signed application and proclamation.

Is this correct-- I submit my application on April 1  but I don't have my proclamation signed yet.  I would like to have a reviewer look at my action plan and my play day plans and if there are any questionable audits etc. 

At that point after receiving the reviewer's comments, I would revise what was needed and provide all documents including the appropriately signed proclamation and mail it in prior to May 15.  It would only be the April 1st deadline that an incomplete application would be submitted, the final and complete app. would be submitted by the May 15 deadline.

Also the deadline date is it a postmark date or must you have it in your office by the April 1st date (the maps and other items)

Like i wrote above, postmarked by April 1st is within the guidelines ;)

Regarding your other questions, I believe what you are asking is can your application be reviewed by the KaBOOM! National Campaign for Play review team without a signed proclimation? Yes.

You should however, be working with policy makers on the draft proclimation, and submit your to-date draft if possible.
