Are we hurting our kids?
Posted: 14 Aug 07 1:45 PM

There's a really interesting conversation happening at the New York Times web site. Apparently there is a new book out about the dangers of overscheduling and overstructuring play for children. It's only a paragraph, but it's generating a lot of comments (over 100)... and the comments are what are so interesting:

What do you think?

I enjoyed the presentation at UPLAY in New Orleans (2007) because the presenter (I forgot her name) brought in marbles, PVC pipe, scraps of 2X4s and gutters.  She explained how she allowed her young students the opportunity explore and invent ways to play including the using many unique pieces of equipment.  WE had the opportunity in small groups to use these things and had a blast!  Too many bad influences on TV and games are reflected in the way kids feel disconnected with their peers.  Expecting kids to start team sports at a young age, watching violence on TV, etc.  The article brings up good ideas to think about.  Kids need to be allowed time to slow down and see what options are available by exploring, but also by observing adults involved in unstructured fun and active things.

The value of unstructured play for children is an extremely vital part of their learning process. It allows them to think about ideas, problems and concepts in a whole new way. Giving them the tools to create their own ideas and tackle issues how they see fit. A great tool that KaBOOM! is helping to further the idea of unstructured play is with Imagination Playground. Check it out under the "What we do" tab.
