I just had a bowling fundriaser at a local bowling alley and I had raised the amount of $2.146! I had got tweleve lane sponsors and some people gave me $100 for a lane but most gave me $25. It is a great idea if you have a lot of family and friends and also if you have a local bowling alley that is....

What playground features work for children with autism?

I am doing research in order to improve the design of playgrounds for children with autism.  If you are a parent raising a child with autism, I would love to know what your fantasy playground would look like.  Make your comments here or go and complete a survey at

Utilizing at risk teens for maintenance
Posted: 28 Jun 07 8:51 AM
We have an agreement with a local teen center (at risk teens) in which the teens will be responsible for going to the playground once a month to rake mulch and check for any loose bolts.  The will then notify the township office of any needed maintenance.  It serves as a community service opportunity for them and saves our committee members from getting burned out.

That's a neat idea... and it would be great for the little kids to be able to see them doing the work and "look up to them" i.e. in the sense that here are some young people taking care of the playground, and so we (the little kids) should take care of it, too...

How often will the playground be more formally inspected, i.e. just to make sure that the teens aren't missing something?

This is a great idea, and I would love to know more.  I have the same question about "quality control".  Plus, I would like to know if there are any funding opportunities related to employing teens in this way.  I think that maintenance of many of our playspaces (I am located in inner-city Cleveland) is just as important as the original build.  Anyone with thoughts, please respond.  Thanks.

We have had great success using people who are on court ordered community service.  These are not serial killers, they are simply people who have too many speeding tickets, or did something stupid one night.  They are always willing to help because building a playground is alot more enjoying than picking up trash along the highway.  They are hard workers and they do what you tell them.  The quality control has never been an issue.

The actual kids playing on the playground are another great group to utilize! I know that on many revisits, when asks who checks the nuts and bolts, most Principals will tell you that they hear it first from the kids! They are the ones who are out there playing around day in and day out, so just make sure to let them know that if they find something that isn't quite right, they should alert an authority figure right away.

This sounds like a great idea. WE have a number of our club members who are Jr and Sr High youth, and feel it would be great getting them involved in the maintenance. We will put together a schedule...

That sounds like a great idea and a good use of the center's resources. One good way to make sure they don't miss anything is to have whoever is conducting the maintenance check fill out an inspection checklist every time they survey the playground.
