Moveable Sidewalk Games
Posted: 05 Aug 08 4:57 PM

We don't have room to paint hopscotch or four square during the build as we will be walking over all of the sidewalks the whole day.  There is no other asphalt or concrete slab.

So I had the idea of making moveable ones and I would like any thoughts, advise you might have on the idea.  We purchase vinyl and spray paint and then paint the vinyl with the games.  They then could be rolled up and put in the storage shed with the other playground equipment and pulled when the kids wanted them.

Do you think this would work?

I think this sounds like a great idea! If you wanted to, you could also do the painting beforehand with the children or make the moveable sidewalks as a youth activity to make it a fun activity and help make the children feel part of the process. This could also serve as a learning opportunity for the children of your community before or during the build.   I found a great website, http://library.thinkquest.org/J0110166/hopscotch.htm, that shows different versions of hopscotch from around the world.  This would be an awesome way for children to learn about play in different countries and learn about the countries themselves.

Good luck and have fun!

The one thing that you'll want to be careful with when using vinyl are the weather conditions.  If the vinyl gets wet at all while the kids are using it, it could become extremely slippery.  Also be careful of the type of paint that you get, as the glossy paints tend to be more slippery than the flat based ones.  You can buy various types of spray paint so hopefully you'll be able to find one that is appropriate.  I recommend using the inverted spray paint; this basically means that you can hold the can upside down and spray towards the ground, instead of having to hold the can upright and spray against a wall.  Best of luck with your games!

I think it would be a wonderful idea.  Plus allowing the children to assist you helps them feel like they are a part of the process.

Maybe an alternative to vinyl would be rubber. You can cut shapes out of rubber- ie- lily pad, and paint numbers on those to use as moveable hopscotch. An this way the pattern can also change and the kids can become creative with it.

Going back to an early post about using this activity as a Service Learning tool for the kids to do. This might be a great opportunity to paint the hopscotch and other games prior to the actual build day as one of those events. Another suggestion would be to have a monthly service learning day, post-build, and incorporate the painting of hopscotch and other games during this time.

To touch on your moveable games idea, I know carpet stores usually give away their samples. You might be able to use them to create some out-of-the-box games. That kids can easily help you get out and put away.
