trying to have a playground for a new small school

I am a special needs teacher of preschool children with autism. My school has about 120 children at the current site. Our school is the early childhood school for our county.  We have 2 inclusive 4-k classes and 1 inclusive kindergarten class. There are 10 classes of preschoolers with special needs including; autism, hearing impaired, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, etc.
This is our 13th year of operation at our current site. We are having a new school built and we will need a handicapped accessible playground for children from 3yrs. to 6 yrs. of age. This is so important for our children as many of them cannot play outside in their neighborhoods. Can anyone help us with this huge project? We appreciate everyone. Thanks, gloria

Hi Gloria,

My name is Caleb and I'm a Project Manager here at KaBOOM!.  I did a special needs playground with the Junior League of Macon back in March and when I saw your note I thought of putting you in touch with them.  Apparently you have already been in touch with Dr. Kelly and Cindy Adrien, however, so you're already two steps ahead of me! :)  I'm not sure what kind of help you are looking for, but a good place to start is checking out all the materials on our website.  KaBOOM! is focused on community-built playgrounds, which can save you a lot of money in terms of the installation, but is also a terrific way to get people to take a stake in the success of the project and divide up all the work that goes into a community-built playground build.  We have a toolkit, which is now available for free to download online, that has all of these tasks divided up into committees.  Each committee has a toolkit book with tons of ideas and sample materials to help you start planning.  These committees are the same way we structure our planning when KaBOOM! leads a build.  You also already found the forums, which is great because there are people on here who have built without the help of KaBOOM! that can provide you with tips on how they organized their builds.  I would also take a look at the Road Map.  This will help you assess the stage of the project that you are at and what your next steps should be.  You really can do this!!  Let me know how I can help and I'll be glad to chime in from time to time, but with Cindy and Dr. Kelly on your side, you are in good hands; they have a ton of great advice to share!  Best of luck!

To really achieve a truly accessable and more importantly usable play space for all children, find a creative, perferable independent, play space designer.A designer who does not have thier head buried in pre-manufactured playground manufactures cataloges. What you want is a play space that focuses on the childrens abilities and not their disabilities. You need to think past the tradional solutions of climbers and slides and redefine your definition of play. Games, movement, interaction, scensory stimulation, manipulation, basically keep it simple, open ended and changable. The other day I watched several children having a great time playing under a tree catching the leaves as they fell for over an hour, laughing, interacting, communicating, exercisng. Almost any child could have been playing this game no matter thier situation. Get the idea!
