New Online Resource to Identify Federal Grant Opportunities
USDA's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives is offering a new valuable resource, "Federal Funds for Organizations That Help Those in Need." The online grants catalog will help to find Federal grant opportunities suitable for faith-based and community organizations. To view the list of more than 150 programs, please go to: http://www.whitehouse.gov/government/fbci/grants-catalog-index.html. Contact information is provided with each grant opportunity, which is the best place to learn about the application process and other details about the program. For assistance with the state-administered program opportunities of USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, there is also contact information for funding opportunities by state. To search by state for domestic food and nutrition program opportunities, please go to: http://www.usda.gov/fbci/fnsstateprograms_fbci.html. For more information, please send an email to: fbci@usda.gov.

A Modest Proposal to Slash Public Education
In an article in the Fayette County Review, Chuck Warzyn writes, "Playgrounds are a veritable gold mine when it comes to saving money. I’m not suggesting we remove playgrounds altogether. Oh, no. We need to leave a semblance of support when it comes to physical exercise and playtime." Read the article in its entirety, then talk about it in the KaBOOM! Forums.

Put the FUN Back in Fundraising

Fundraising Idea: The Right to Wear Jeans Since Friday is often “Dress Down Day”, we're only one step away from blue jeans. Charge everyone an extra dollar on Friday and hold a contest for who has the oldest, most rotten pair of jeans. Imagine a day at work in your very own favorite pair of blue jeans. What would it take for your boss to give in and let you forget the dress code? Well, how about a small donation to the playspace project?
Getting the Most Out of Your Blue Jeans Week
1. Get the boss’ approval or get in big trouble! They need to okay a week in which every employee can purchase the right to wear blue jeans at $5 a day or $20 a week. 2. Advertise Blue Jeans Week all over the office. Tell everybody that the money is going for a great cause. 3. Have a sign-up and registration form so that you can keep track of who paid for THE RIGHT TO WEAR JEANS and who’s just trying to get away with it!

Earn a Founder's Badge

|
A Unique Opportunity to Participate, and a Special Recognition
KaBOOM! online portal users will soon see “badges” besides people’s names in message boards and on About Me profile pages. Some of these will indicate the type of experience people have had in community playspace builds (for example, having participated in a build, led a project, attended a KaBOOM! U Play!, etc.) or other ways of participation in the play movement. As announced last week in Foster City, U Play! participants will have a very unique opportunity to earn an online portal Founders badge simply by being an active participant in the community message boards on the portal. Anyone posting at least 5 messages during the month of November will be awarded an online Founder’s badge – but of course, we hope you will each post many more than 5 messages! We are sure everyone must have some big questions about their prospective playspace build, or about issues surrounding play in general, running through their head as they get settled back at home – and we really encourage you to post these and get your colleagues reading and responding to them!

|
Challenge Grant Applications Will Be Available Through the Portal on November 15
The first round of KaBOOM!/The Home Depot 2006 Challenge Grants will be announced on the new KaBOOM! online portal on November 15, 2005. These grants are awarded on a competitive basis, and are provided to support playground build and field refurbishment projects that are underway and in early to mid-stage. The grants will range from a base of $3,000 to $5,000, with an ability for any project to earn up to an additional $1,250 during the course of the project. All funds are earmarked to defer the cost of equipment for playground projects, or various other types of expenses for field refurbishments. These grants serve three purposes: direct financial assistance in the amount of the grant; as good leverage for other fundraising efforts by a project; and with value added in the form of online and conference call educational and networking opportunities with KaBOOM! and other grantees. Be sure to stay tuned to the portal for the announcement and an application!

Restoring Hope on the Gulf Coast
When Bay St. Louis, Mississippi was nearly wiped out by Hurricane Katrina, former resident Ginny Reynolds remembered the impact that Hurricane Camille had on her as a child. Knowing how important a sense of normalcy is for children, Ginny wanted to see a playground built as the first step toward recovery in this community.
Everyone at KaBOOM! was particularly moved by this story, so we're dedicated to securing enough donations to make sure all of that happens for Ginny and the kids. See how it's all coming together.
