San Francisco Residents Concerned About Deteriorating Parks

From the Examiner:
Miguel Abril said he dreams of the day he walks onto the soccer field at Dolores Park and has lush green grass under his sneakers.
The Mission resident is just one of many soccer players who have complained to The City about the brown, muddy blades that make up the pitch at Dolores Park. A Web site run by the Neighborhood Park Council, a nonprofit park advocacy group, allows residents such as Abril to file their complaints directly to city staff.
Every quarter, the council compiles a list of park complaints and ranks The City’s “top problem parks,” hoping that the Recreation and Park Department, which oversees the 225 parks and community centers in San Francisco’s city limits, will be able to address the problems.
In the past two years, residents have complained about issues such as mounting graffiti on park walls, stumbling over human feces at playgrounds and finding homeless encampments at Golden Gate Park.

Vermont Parents Look to Create a Children's Museum

After about an hour of quiet playing with their toys, 3-year-old playmates Lindsay Beer and Phoebe Henderson were ready to go outside on a recent afternoon. They put on their coats and ran out to the back yard.
The girls' mothers are working on a proposal to help expand their children's play and learning by creating The Green Mountain Children's Museum.
Plans for a children's museum began about three years ago when Beer and a group of community members realized that a key component was missing from the local recreation industry, said Lindsay's mother, Mia Graham Beer, of Shelburne. There are not enough places for young children to have quality experiences, she said. There are not enough places for kids "just to play," the 41-year-old woman said.

From South Mississippi's Sun Herald:
A playground will open in the Fort Bayou area Saturday, and it offers relief to parents in the neighborhood of about 1,500 homes that never had many safe places for children to play.
Area children helped design the playground that will be built next to Ocean Springs Hospital thanks to a donation of time, equipment and labor from about 150 volunteer workers from KaBOOM!, AmeriCares and the city of Ocean Springs, according to a news release.
City Assistant Parks and Leisure Services Director Geri Straight said the playground is a big improvement to the area.
From The Mississippi Press:
Volunteers from the city, AmeriCares and KaBOOM! will build a new playground on Saturday in the Fort Bayou neighborhood.
The playground will be built in park space adjacent to the Ocean Springs Hospital, city leaders announced in a press release issued Sunday.
"We are thrilled to receive the generous donation from AmeriCares to fund a new KaBOOM! playground on the site donated to the city by the county," said Mayor Connie Moran. "Thanks to the involvement of the Ocean Springs Hospital and Jackson County, the Fort Bayou neighborhood of over 1,500 homes will have its first playground."

Something important is lost when schools ban or overregulate recess.
Remember when recess was the best part of the school day? Not any more. In some parts of the country, that carefree half-hour — when kids could run, jump, scream and play tag or other games — is on the endangered list.

Parks are popping up all over Jackson County thanks in part to KaBOOM!, a national organization dedicated to creating safe play spaces for children.
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, KaBOOM! came to the Coast and made a commitment to build 100 playgrounds during the next two years. Already KaBOOM! is ahead of the curve, having completed 40 along the Coast. Four of those playgrounds are in Pascagoula and Moss Point and the organization recently held a design day with Gautier children and parents, the first step in building a new playground in Hickory Hill.
Perhaps one of the most amazing things about KaBOOM!'s approach to building playgrounds is how the organization involves the community from the design phase to the building phase.

GAUTIER, 11/22/06 -- Carousals and sandboxes and swings, oh my, echoed throughout the group of kids participating in the KaBOOM! Design Day Tuesday.
"I like mazes," 9-year-old Colton Samblis said as he drew his ideal maze on a KaBOOM! playsheet.
Armed with a notebook full of his own personal designs, Colton and other children helped organizers plan the KaBOOM! playground being built in Hickory Hill.
"It's not something you see at every other playground and it would make it ours," Colton said.

Young girls who live within a half-mile of a park are more physically active than those with no parks near their homes, a new study shows.
And the more amenities like tennis or basketball courts, playgrounds, and running tracks in these neighborhood parks, the more vigorously active the girls were, Dr. Deborah A. Cohen of the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California, and colleagues found.

Carousels and horses and dragons, oh my: The residents of Missoula, Montana know how to a good playspace for kids. Between a refurbished carousel and a custom-built playground called Dragon Hollow, Missoula children have a magical play area. Even better, town residents have a special bond with the space, thanks to a community build effort. Kids designed the playground and thousands of volunteers built the carousel and Dragon Hollow themselves, giving the community a real sense of ownership.
“Everyone feels a part of it and contributed something, whether they built stairs or painted something,” said Theresa Cox, executive director of A Carousel for Missoula and Dragon Hollow Playarea. “We had a story of a lawyer spending all day doing something a carpenter could have done in 20 minutes, but he was so proud when he finished.”

New Orleans Park Recovers, but Slowly

New Orleans' City Park was once a lush Southern landscape of lazy lagoons, majestic ancient oaks draped with Spanish moss, and magnolias framing the fairways of three golf courses.
That was before Hurricane Katrina swamped nearly all of it with up to 8 feet of water. Most of the grass in New Orleans' biggest park died, along with more than a thousand trees. The golf courses were left covered with weeds, the lagoons choked with debris.
But the 1,300-acre park, one-third larger than New York's Central Park, is slowly coming back, with the help of volunteers, private donations from around the world and a major gift from New Orleans Saints star Reggie Bush.

For Immediate Release Contact: Mory Fontanez, KaBOOM!, 202-464-6171, mfontanez@kaboom.org Washington, D.C., November 6, 2006 –KaBOOM!, a 10-year-old national nonprofit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America, appointed Bruce Bowman as its first-ever Chief Operating Officer effective immediately.
KaBOOM! is well known for its model of social enterprise that has taken the organization to scale in terms of its staff, budget, revenue, and impact. By bringing on Bowman, the organization is preparing to take its next quantum leap by complementing the skills of Co-Founder and CEO Darell Hammond with those of an inside, day-to-day manager of its current strategy, people and processes.
“Over the past ten years KaBOOM! has grown from a tiny non-profit with less than three employees (2 of them co-founders) to a 75-person, four-office, $19.5 million dollar organization that brings the power of play to hundreds of communities every year,” says Hammond. “Bruce is coming on board at a time when KaBOOM! is experiencing tremendous growth in all areas of the organization. His leadership will help take the organization to the next level in terms of our impact, energy and the scope of our work,” he said.
Bowman joins the organization from Wild Oats Corporation where he served as the Senior Vice President of Business Development. Prior to that, Bowman worked as the Chief Operating Officer for Ben & Jerry’s where he was introduced to Darell Hammond and the two began working towards a partnership. As a result, Ben & Jerry’s joined KaBOOM! to build eight playgrounds across the country, from the 2000 to 2003, while also introducing KaBERRY KaBOOM!, an ice cream flavor dedicated to the organization with a percentage of the proceeds going to support the KaBOOM! vision. Shortly after leaving Ben & Jerry’s in 2003, Bowman became further involved in KaBOOM!, signing on as an active member of Board of Directors.
As COO, Bowman will work with Hammond to improve upon the organization’s internal procedures and processes. In addition to using the KaBOOM! formula for performance reporting linking to budgets and outcome, Bowman will also assume tactical responsibility for implementing the KaBOOM! “Going to Scale” strategy and reporting on its outcome. “KaBOOM! has incredible plans for the future and an amazing track record of success and past accomplishments to measure against,” says Bowman. “As a member of the Board of Directors and during my work at Ben and Jerry’s, I’ve watched KaBOOM! grow bigger, better and make a greater impact every year, but never has there been a more exciting and important time for me to join KaBOOM! in a leadership role. As a strong believer in the KaBOOM! vision, I’m committed to driving us forward until we have realized this vision,” he said.
