Limited Access to Exercise Facilities Fueling Childhood Obesity Epidemic
By KaBOOM News @ 5:39 AM :: 278 Views :: 0 Comments :: General News About Play
HealthDay News
February 8, 2006

Lack of access to exercise facilities, particularly in low-income areas, is one force that's driving the obesity epidemic that's endangering America's children.

But "food insecurity," a term used to describe the feeling generated by not having a guaranteed food supply, doesn't seem to be a factor in the trend.

Those are the conclusions of two studies that appear in the February issue of Pediatrics.

"Our country faces a serious obesity problem -- one that disproportionately impacts poor, minority individuals and communities," said Penny Gordon-Larsen, an assistant professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina's School of Public Health and Medicine, and the author of the physical activity study. "Our research suggests that perhaps one way to address this would be to argue for greater opportunities for exercise in disadvantaged communities.

Obesity Doubles Kids' Diabetes Risk

MONDAY, Feb. 6

There's more evidence that being overweight is bad for kids, with a new study finding that obese children are more than twice as likely as normal-weight children to have diabetes.

Researchers at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor also estimated that 229,000 American children have diabetes, and that a third of those diabetic children are obese. This combination of obesity and diabetes may soon strain the nation's health-care system, the researchers added.

"Among school-aged children, obese children have a greater than twofold chance of having diabetes, compared with children of normal weight," study author Dr. Joyce Lee, of the division of pediatric endocrinology and the Child Health Evaluation Unit, said in a prepared statement.

I need a playground

Special to the Star-Telegram

Bleary-eyed, I stumble into the bathroom after turning off the alarm and rolling out of bed. There, in the corner of the room, sits the monster waiting to pounce. She lures me with her bright, shiny buttons and sleek façade. I cringe, fighting the urge, resisting her call, but finally I give in.

I stand on the scale; she buzzes happily as the numbers go higher and higher in a dizzy whirl of ecstasy. I moan in despair and pronounce the white porcelain beast the victor. Two more pounds have been added since last week!

What happened to that skinny little girl who used to eat anything she wanted and never gain a pound? She would snack on Halloween candy for months after the holiday had ended. There was no letting out the waistline on her pants or moving the buttons to accommodate the extra inches.

Despite unseasonably warm and sunny weather, no children played on the section of Glenville School's playground reserved for the youngest grades last week.

In fact, had it not been for some delays at the Department of Parks and Recreation caused by recent storms, at least three of the 20-year-old play structures would not have been there at all.

Rubber Mulch Chips: Playground Fire Hazard?

Osceola County is ordering an investigation into whether rubber mulch chips on playground are too flammable to use and a danger to children.

The investigation comes after flames engulfed a Buenaventura Lakes playground on Sunday.

The Fire Marshal's Office says it took nothing more than a lighter to set the blaze.
