This year more than 200,000 children will go to the emergency room with playground-related injuries.
As part of Playground Safety Week, which runs through Friday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has some safety tips for parents.
For starters, make sure that children are playing on equipment that is appropriate for their age. Younger children are developmentally different than older children and need separate areas with different equipment.

Remembering Jane Jacobs, 1916 - 2006 From PPS.org
Anyone who ever met Jane Jacobs or read her books couldn't help but be infected by her enthusiasms. She loved cities and celebrated the life that teems within them. She articulated better than anyone how the best ideas about making cities great come not from theories and master plans but from careful observation of what goes on around us. This was a startling, radical idea when she first proposed it in the 1950s and 60s, and it changed the way North Americans think about cities.

April 24-28 is National Playground Safety Week

Play can hurt, even kill.
Parents of young children agonize over how much freedom to give their children on playgrounds. Running and swinging can lead to nasty falls. But a child at play explores and learns; and an active child is fit, not to mention ready for sleep at bedtime.
For at least the last decade, children have suffered around 200,000 injuries yearly on U.S. public and home playground equipment, according to government estimates. As National Playground Safety Week approaches this April 24-28, safety advocates insist many such mishaps are preventable.

By Sarah Zopfi The Herald-Dispatch
HUNTINGTON -- Spring and summer are often thought of as relaxing and easy, but for many outdoor enthusiasts and children, warm weather recreation can pose some unlikely danger.
Bicycle, skating and swimming accidents, along with bug bites, rashes and a nasty sunburn are just a handful of things that can seriously curb outdoor fun -- often in just a matter of minutes.
According to Safe Kids USA, bicycles are associated with more childhood injuries than any other consumer product except the automobile. More than 70 percent of all children ages 5 to 14 ride bikes. Between 1990 and 2001, at least 147 children died from playground equipment-related injuries. Nearly 70 percent of these deaths occurred on home playgrounds.

KaBOOM! and The Home Depot Build New Playground in Pass Christian, MS
Project is fourth in the Gulf Coast through Operation Playground
More than 500 volunteers from The Home Depot and the local community came together today to build a new playground at War Memorial Park in Pass Christian, MS. Hurricane Katrina destroyed more than half of Pass Christian, including the playground at War Memorial Park. The new playground, within walking distance from most of town, provides residents with a community gathering place where parents can let their children play free of the dangers of debris from the storm-battered landscape. The project is the fourth by KaBOOM! in the Gulf Coast as part of Operation Playground, the organization'’s two-year initiative to build 100 playgrounds in areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the second in the Gulf Coast by KaBOOM! and founding partner The Home Depot. Bob Nardelli, Chairman, President and CEO of The Home Depot, will discuss the Pass Christian project and the importance of corporate volunteerism on CNBC's On the Money program, Tuesday, April 25 at 7:00 PM ET. Playground Surfacing is as Diverse as the Equipment That’s on It

By Jeromy Morningstar childcarebusiness.com
It's no secret that kids have vast imaginations matched only by their relentless pursuit of adventure. To prove it, simply visit the nearest playground. How often have we seen children using play equipment in a manner inconsistent with its original intent? A well-designed guardrail becomes a high-wire act or a slide becomes a giant wave to be surfed down. Unfortunately, and in spite of our best efforts, the very nature of children’s play makes falls inevitable. It is estimated that more than 70 percent of playground injuries are due to falls to the surface. In light of this, it’s a wonder that protective surfacing options remain one of the most overlooked and under-evaluated aspects of playground design.

More than 50 Taunton High School students such as Heather Standring, have volunteered to take a day out of their April vacation to build a new playground for Taunton's Old Colony YMCA.
"I went to daycare and a playground is always a big part for the kids," the 17-year-old said. "I thought it'd be fun to do."
Standring, two other schoolmates and Christine Larkin visited the site of the new playground earlier this week. The new playground, which will be located to the left of the Y's main entrance, is set to begin construction next Thursday.

Five Fundraising Tips for Spring

|
Spring into a New Playground With These Fundraising Ideas!
Plant the Seeds of Play and Watch them Grow!!
- Running of the Ducks. Sell rubber ducks ($15-25 each) and mark each with a number. Release them on a local river, and the first one across the finish line wins! Get local businesses involved, and encourage a competitive spirit –you’ll see donations multiply.
- Sell flower-planting and flower-watering services. This is a great activity to involved kids and their parents. It can be a one-time event, or you can auction off once-a-week services that last the entire length of spring.
- Community Dog Wash. Help the dogs in your town wash off those winter coats and get ready for spring! This is another fun activity for families or youth groups. Hint: Ask a local pet store to donate shampoo and combs, and be sure to advertise in veterinary offices!
- Softball Tournaments and Fun Runs. Everyone is eager to get outside and enjoy the sunshine…so give them something fun to do!
- Memorial Day Barbeque. Cooking outdoors is a great excuse for a fundraiser! Everyone loves to have get-togethers for grilling on this favorite holiday. And if you can't get your whole neighborhood together, ask all your neighbors who are having smaller celebrations to collect 50 cents for every can or bottle of soda (or anything else!) to the playground fund. You'll be surprised how much that will amount to!

Question: How much money does it take to build a playground?
Answer: Playground budgets normally range anywhere from $5,000 to more than $100,000. We like to tell people that with the community-build model, you can build a top-notch 50' by 50' playground for about $30,000. Costs vary widely depending on the size of the site, the number of kids using it, site preparation needs like removing old equipment, and the kind of equipment and safety surfacing that you choose.
Fundraising Factoid: Did You Know...?
People are more than twice as likely to give money if they're asked directly.
Helpful Tip: Offer Child Care! You'll get better turnout at evening fundraising events and playspace meetings if you offer free baby-sitting on site. Recruit local high-school students to be baby-sitters, and be sure to register each child as he or she arrives. Give us your ideas about fundraising at the online Fundraising Ideas That Worked forum.

Education Correspondent John Merrow NewsHour Extra
Eight months after Hurricane Katrina destroyed most of one Mississippi school district, students are going to class in trailers, living in tents and trying to rebuild their lives.
Students riding the school bus in Bay Saint Louis, Miss. used to travel past historical churches and scenic beaches, but now they look out their windows at piles of collapsed houses and cement walls spray painted with street names because the signs were washed away.
"We have nothing left on the beachfront, nothing. We had a beautiful beachfront. But everything is gone," explained the bus driver, Dave Taylor, in an April 6 NewsHour broadcast.

The town wants to replace the decades-old slides and monkey bars with newer, safer equipment.
"It's definitely aging out and nearing where it could be a liability issue," said James MacFarland, the town's parks director.
At the Glenville Town Board meeting Wednesday, MacFarland asked for a resolution that would allow him to seek proposals from playground equipment manufacturers to outfit the park with new equipment.

New research out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill finds that physically active adolescents are not only improving their health –they also are decreasing the chance that they will get into trouble.
Among teens who fare well are skateboarders, particularly regarding their self-esteem and despite a lack of wide public support for this activity.
The study found that teens who participate in a wide variety of physical activities, particularly with their parents, are at decreased risk for drinking, drugs, violence, smoking, sex and delinquency, compared to teens who watch a lot of TV.
