Determined Group Proves You're Never Too Young

The Torch Club may have been only seven members strong, but this group of kids aged 11 to 13 wanted to build a playground as a service project. Educational Director Nicole Anderson had no idea where to start, so at their urging, she attended last year's U Play! in Foster City, Calif. 

Nicole returned home armed with her toolkit, fundraising ideas and above all the confidence needed to get the job done. The project portal is where it all comes together, so check it out and be sure to log in and leave a comment!

Britain's leading play safety expert has some simple advice for grown-ups: relax. Let your kids have fun; let them be challenged; let them explore - and let them take risks.

David Yearley, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, says that years of concentrating solely on safety has led to the spread of 'boring' public play areas. With £124m in lottery cash earmarked for sprucing up playgrounds, he says it's time to shift the focus to 'controlled risk'.

"Some people take a lifetime to make an impression, others about a minute. Steve Ambriz was the latter type," writes Dennis Reynolds about the City of Orange, Calif. councilman who lost his life in a tragic accident two weeks ago. "I felt like I had just met a person whose dedication to children’s issues and volunteerism, and whose love of life, knew no bounds."

The fact that Canada scores a dismal D when it comes to producing active, healthy kids should come as no surprise.
 
The constant stream of stories about childhood obesity has largely inured us to the notion that we are producing a generation of tubby tots.

Still, the new report card that was released last week by Active Healthy Kids Canada serves as a useful reminder of where we have gone so terribly wrong.
