A Study in Contrasts

After attending U Play! 2005, Kathleen was determined to bridge the age and cultural differences in her neighborhood in order to get both parks renovated. The result? The final phase was completed ahead of schedule. Read Kathleen's story and please log in and leave a comment!

BRIDGEPORT- Lindsay Kagawa walked into the activity room of the Kolbe Early Education Center on Friday, looked around at all the children and all the parents that had gathered there and came straight to the point.

Diana Taurasi wasn't coming.

This announcement was nothing new. Kagawa has had to announce this kind of heartbreaking news a lot of times. It's not her fault. It's not Diana's fault. There simply aren't enough hours in the day for Taurasi, the player extraordinaire for the Phoenix Mercury, in her third WNBA season.

For four years, she was the most recognizable face for the University of Connecticut women's basketball team.

Now, she's one of the most recognizable faces on the planet.

NEW BRITAIN - As the school year comes to a close, one fourth-grade class at Lincoln Elementary School chose a new playground over a pizza party.

The school is currently raising money to build a new, safe playground for the students. In a recent effort, each class was given a one gallon milk carton to collect loose change and the class that raised the most money was awarded a pizza party. The school was able to raise over $800. It wasn't the mayor flipping pancakes, the dozens of kids pounding out bird houses or even the scores of volunteers laying sod on the soccer field that held 10-year-old Jeremy Welsh's attention Wednesday morning.

Instead, it was the chance to cover an ugly splotch of black asphalt with a giant, colorful map of the world that delighted him most.

"It was awful looking before," said the Irvington Elementary School fifth-grader. "The whole place is going to be neat when we get finished."

More than 200 volunteers got together Saturday to build a playground at a Hollygrove child-care center, an essential step in preparing for an August reopening of the nonprofit center, officials said.

The Royal Castle Child Development Center, a United Way affiliate at 3800 Eagle St., served 75 to 100 children before Hurricane Katrina.

Installation of monkey bars, a swing set, benches and other equipment took most of the day and was made possible by volunteers from local colleges, businesses and nonprofit groups.

Construction of the playground was sponsored by the United Way; AmeriCares, an international humanitarian aid group; and KaBoom, a national nonprofit that helps ensure children have access to play facilities.

The project is an important step in hurricane recovery, said Todd Battiste, the United Way's local vice president for children and family. "Families can't return if there's not quality child care available," he said.

The Village Toy Shop is on a campaign to get kids off the couch, away from television and out running around, batting balls, riding bikes and chasing butterflies in the fresh air. The Village Toy Shop highlights active play as part of a healthy child's way of life. By keeping them busy, whether outside or inside, activities other than television and the couch promote a positive, healthy lifestyle.

Play Time: Fun Must Be a Big Part of the School Day

Children need to play. This observation might seem obvious, but lately, it is my rallying cry. It has to be. There is so much discussion among parents and educators about the relative benefits of academic versus developmentally appropriate preschools, and as testing rules the day, proponents of the academic model seem to be gaining ground.

But I am a parent, and I have been a preschool teacher for more than twenty years, and my experience and training tell me one thing loud and clear.

Children need to play.

KaBOOM! and Opus Northwest Provides Clark Elementary School Students with a New Place to Play

For the 500 children who attend Clark Elementary School in Portland, the only place to play in their school yard is on a rotting wood playground that is more than 20 years old. The school district facilities team declared the structure unsafe years ago, but had no funds for playground replacement. Parents and students have been fundraising for three years for a new playground, and have recently learned that Opus Northwest, a full-service real estate development company with offices in Portland, will invest in the project and will help them lead the hands on construction this Saturday of a custom playground designed by the students! “This project is very special for my team,” explained John Bartell, vice president and general manager, “We are part of a company with a long history of community stewardship, and we are really enjoying this opportunity to contribute in a ‘hands-on’ way to the vitality of this Portland neighborhood.” In addition to this Portland project, Opus Northwest is leading playground projects with KaBOOM! this year in Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Minneapolis, as well as a skatepark in Seattle.
