KaBOOM! Shows Boston How WE Play!
A one day training guides community members and organizers to playspace success

On Wednesday, April 19, 2006, KaBOOM! presented its fun-filled Workshop Entirely on Play (WE Play!) to community organizers interested in building a great new place to play in their neighborhoods. Nearly 40 individuals representing 30 organizations traveled to the Greater Boston area to attend the free one-day training session. As a special bonus, the following day, attendees were provided the opportunity to experience a community playground build at a local YMCA in Taunton, Mass.

KaBOOM! packaged a decade of first-hand community-build leadership experience into the day-long training event. WE Play! Boston sessions included The Importance of Play; The KaBOOM! Community-Build Roadmap; Selecting a Playspace Site, Equipment and Safety Surfacing; and Effective FUNdraising Strategies.

"KaBOOM! encourages attendees to learn from and network with other project leaders, and get inspired to change the face of play in their communities," said Hanh Le, Director of Partnerships and Trainings, KaBOOM!. "We also want attendees of WE Play! to leave aware of the wealth of resources available at all times on the KaBOOM! Online Portal. Our ultimate goal is to help make the journey to improving communities a pleasant trip."

This completed the second of three KaBOOM! trainings scheduled this year.  On July 13-15 KaBOOM! will bring its two and a half day University of Play (U Play!) to Chicago. Advocates of play will have the same great networking opportunities as they do at WE Play!, but also receive more in-depth information on grassroots community-organizing, public relations, playspace design, maintenance and much more.

For more information on upcoming KaBOOM! trainings, visit the Training Opportunities section on the KaBOOM! Web site or call 202-659-0215, ext. 4000.

I'm not sure what was covered on the WePlay training, but the people who took advantage of the opportunity to visit the Taunton YMCA build enjoyed a beautiful day of hard work, community spirit and creative construction. Our build went well and I hope it was a good example for them. We really appreciated their participation.
Thanks, Ted

Thanks for you quick comment, ted; it was great to meet you on Thursday! This is the first time we combined a one-day regional WE Play! with a full build. Thanks to the Y and The Home Depot for putting together such a wonderful build. I am hoping some of our WE Play! participants will come on here and let us know if they thought it was a successful combination - the "classroom" day plus the build day, or what we could do differently, etc. And thanks for the absolutely incredible weather - I hope everyone can get that kind of day for their build!

As one of the KaBOOM! staff members who helped present the WE Play! training this week it was a pleasure to meet so many excited, energized community organizers and citizens concerned in the health and happiness of children. The energy of all the WE Play! participants was inspiring, and being able to get outside the next day and build along side our new friends made for another amazing day.

If WE Play! or Build Day helped connect ideas for you or bring the training to life, please leave a note here telling us how. That way KaBOOM! can learn how to keep doing more to build towards a great place to play within walking distance of every child in Boston, the US, and all of North America!

Correcting my mistake
The rating should have been 10, 5 will just have to do.

Well we are on our way and the countdown starts. Meg was there to help us with our build design. We were doing our best to match what the children had visioned. We wait for the 3 designs, let the the children decide the design.
Good Luck on your design day!

Congratulations on your Design Day, Don! Design Day is such an amazing opportunity to get a community excited for, informed about and committed to their playspace project. Sounds like you were able to do just that! Thanks for keeping us updated on your project, and I encourage other WE Play! participants to keep in touch with us as well – we love to hear from you!
