KaBOOM! Shows Boston How WE Play!
A one day training guides community members and organizers to playspace success
On Wednesday, April 19, 2006, KaBOOM! presented its fun-filled Workshop Entirely on Play (WE Play!) to community organizers interested in building a great new place to play in their neighborhoods. Nearly 40 individuals representing 30 organizations traveled to the Greater Boston area to attend the free one-day training session. As a special bonus, the following day, attendees were provided the opportunity to experience a community playground build at a local YMCA in Taunton, Mass.
KaBOOM! packaged a decade of first-hand community-build leadership experience into the day-long training event. WE Play! Boston sessions included The Importance of Play; The KaBOOM! Community-Build Roadmap; Selecting a Playspace Site, Equipment and Safety Surfacing; and Effective FUNdraising Strategies.
"KaBOOM! encourages attendees to learn from and network with other project leaders, and get inspired to change the face of play in their communities," said Hanh Le, Director of Partnerships and Trainings, KaBOOM!. "We also want attendees of WE Play! to leave aware of the wealth of resources available at all times on the KaBOOM! Online Portal. Our ultimate goal is to help make the journey to improving communities a pleasant trip."
This completed the second of three KaBOOM! trainings scheduled this year. On July 13-15 KaBOOM! will bring its two and a half day University of Play (U Play!) to Chicago. Advocates of play will have the same great networking opportunities as they do at WE Play!, but also receive more in-depth information on grassroots community-organizing, public relations, playspace design, maintenance and much more.
