A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine examines environmental factors that encourage children to be more physically active during playtime. Researchers found that children participated in more moderate and vigorous physical activity when provided with portable play equipment, such as jump ropes and riding toys, as opposed to playing only on stationary playground equipment. The study examined play habits at child care centers, as the authors believe that with so many young children spending time in child care facilities, this is where a huge impact could be seen in preventing obesity through play opportunities.
