| The 2008-2009 academic year will be the 50th anniversary of our small, Catholic school. During the past five decades, our school has provided a strong elementary education for thousands of students from the Beach Park, Waukegan, Zion, Winthrop Harbor and other neighboring communities.Our diverse parent and student population is unified in their desire to do well academically and learn the importance of doing what is right both in school and in the community.
With the recent addition of Pre-School for three and four year olds, the growth of our parish and the addition of before and after school-care program, we have been able to grow enrollment to 260 students with an anticipated growth of 7% to 10% next year. In addition to our school enrollment, our religious education program attracts students from five surrounding communities and enrolls over 300 public school children. There is an excitement in the community regarding our recent growth.
In addition to the academic environment, we want to provide an outdoor environment that is a good source of exercise, social interaction and above all, safe. Our playground is open for public usage and is not fenced, enabling children of all ages and their families to enjoy the area.
The current area has limited space and old equipment. We wanted to purchase equipment that many students could enjoy at one time so as to promote sharing,group enjoyment, and socialization. The two items we like were a "Superdome" and a "Climbing Wall". Our school community held various fundraisers and raised just over $7,700. After our fundraiser, we approached playground companies for quotes and were told that safety issues regarding fall zone and landing surfaces needed to be addressed first which would cost approximately $10,000. The two pieces of equipment would be over $20,000.
