More About Me
On my first KaBOOM! build--before I actually joined KaBOOM! as a Project Manager--there came a point about mid-morning when I looked up from the Adventure Bridge I had been dilligently working to assemble and I witnessed a miracle. I had been so consumed by my teams and our components that I hadn't noticed the bright blue posts being errected in the "pit." Nor had I noticed the army of mulch movers dumping load after load of surfacing into the site while leaving a nice little trail of mulch dusting from the mountain of material they were excavating. Suddenly I heard the sounds of drills and hammer as picnic tables and benches were being assembled. To my left, kids were painting a long mural with different environments and animals in each panel. I had been involved with, and planned volunteer projects since high school, but never had I witnessed such seamless coordination of 250 volunteers. But that wasn't the miracle. What impressed me and amazed me most were the small groups of people conversing as they worked, sharing a laugh, or offering a shoulder to rest on. Many of these people were meeting for the first time. The volunteers came as parents, as local business employees, as funding partner voluntters, as community organizers, and as friends. To me, this was what community development was all about: the bringing together of people for a common cause, for the betterment of all. Since that day I have been continually amazed by the partners and volunteers we work with. Every build is unique, but they all still have that common thread of creating a great place to play within walking distance of the children in the neighborhood and doing it all through the participation and leadership of communities. All I can say to that is: Play On!
