girl scout gold award projects
Posted: 10 Mar 07 8:06 PM
I have 12 high school sophmore/junior girls that are searching for a gold award project. It happens that my daughter and I went to Bay St Louis last August and participated in the contruction of 4 kaboom playgrounds. It was a phenomenal experience! I was thinking that my girls could transform an area in New Jersey using this concept of coordinating groups to create a larger project. Has anyone tried this through Girl Scouts? Any suggestions?

Go Girl Scouts! My daughter is a Senior in HS and finishing her Gold Award up this Spring?

Can the Gold Award be a collective project? I would assume they each have to put in their 60 hours and have some individual aspect to the project, but I'm not sure about that. I do know we had an Eagle Scout down in Austin, Texas coordinate a project for his Eagle Award, working with a children's hospital. I think he took on the fundraising initiative, though I believe the Scout requirement prohibited him from doing truly "grassroots" fundraisers. I will see if I can get him to post something here about his experiences!

It's a great idea, I hope it will work out.

Dear atown,

My name is Hudson East and I am 13 years old and am currently working on my eagle scout project.  I don't know much about the gold award project so my advice might not work for girl scouts.  For my eagle scout project for boy scouts, the point of the project is to display my leadership skills and give me valuable experience for when I grow up.  I chose to build a playground at an underpriveleged day care/church/neighbor hood in East Austin.  I began my project last June, 2006 and I will be building the playground on April 28th, 2007.   I had to do all the fundraising myself and have raised $28,000 out of the $35,000 that I need.  For most eagle scout projects, the scout has to really sell his project to the Boy Scout Officials to prove he will display leadership.  For my project, (the playground build), the officials had no problem approving the concept, because it totally demonstrated my leadership skills.   I think that girl scouts will be able to do projects of this nature.  For boy scouts, I have to lead the whole project.  But I have set up team captains for each of the areas needed (I followed the Kaboom model.)  I have 2 fellow boy scouts who are working towards their eagle projects and they are doing phase 2 and phase 3 at the daycare center.  I am tearing down the old playground and building a new one.  One eagle scout is putting in benches and water fountains and the other is putting in a trike path.  Here is a link to my website (which I am in the process of updating and should be completed by next week)  www.safeplayaustin.org   Let me know if I can help you anymore.

Hudson, you rock!  You also bring out a good point...projects can also be about play space enhancement and that can lead to generating interest (and money) for renovations or new playgrounds.  If you take an interest in enhancing a space it gives you an opportunity to engage the general public in the larger issue.  By building benches or planters you add a little pop to an existing site.  Another community building effort you might want to look into is monitoring existing playgrounds with manufactured wood fiber in them.  After a few years they need refurbishing; it's an inexpensive one day event that can make a huge difference in playground safety.  Hudson, again, you rock.  Kazoo congrats to you.
