Playground Size Standards
Posted: 23 Mar 07 2:26 PM
We are in the process of developing plans for renovating the playground in our 4 acre park and were wondering if there are any standards out there as to how big the playground should be in relation to the overall size of the park? Does it matter? Can anyone speak to the trend of providing more play opportunity in less space? (Pro and Con) Thanks!

I checked with Dave Flanigan here at KaBOOM! He works with the Project Managers and has been building playspaces for a long time. Here's what he says:

There is not any standards per se about the size of the playground in relation to the size of the area.  However, here are some considerations:

  1. What is the age range of the kids that will be using the playground (bigger kids need more space)
  2. Do you want the playspace to include activities for all ages (ie, walking trail, exercise stations etc)
  3. Will there be any athletic fields included in the park?
  4. What other amenities will be included? (benches, shade structure etc)

There is no trend that I have seen about condensing the amount of space.  More open space is always a good idea.

Are there any other experience playspace designers or builders who have other thoughts?

Since going to the more expensive chopped rubber surfaces we have made an effort to arrange equipment/purchase equipment in the tightest manner that is reasonable.  This is just to save on surfacing costs.  That said, swings and some other things take alot of room, but we do not intend to eliminate thembecause of their play value.  Rather, if there is a combination structure, we would look at how the elements are arranged so as to minimize surface area.  We also try to carefully space equipment so that the required area of surfacing is there but not a lot extra.  For example, stationary equipment can have overlapping use zones in some cases.  Normally spacing would be 6' + 6' = 12' but there are times when that can be reduced to 9' with stationary equipment.

Just one thought on spacing equipment for schools though-- I would not try to squeeze in more equipment into any given space just because with schools, you have such a high number of kids out at any given recess that it is important to allow that room for movement...I would look at it differently with a school vs. a park.

Thanks for all of the input. We are renovating an existing playground in our neighborhood that belongs to the Village's Parks District. They wanted to take our existing footprint and shrink it significantly to save on the "wood fiber" budget. We adressed our concerns to them over the course of several meetings, and in the end, we managed to save most of our "playspace". We definitely could not have done it without the help and materials from KaBoom!  Thanks!

I think that the only size restriction is that equipment must have enough fall zone space around it.  Obviously putting swings a few feet from a jungle gym is not good.  Also, do not put things too far apart.  You want parents to be able to see the entire playground easily so that they can watch out for the safety of their children.

There are very specific use zones for playgrounds, and that should be something that your playground representitive and installers should be able to work with you on. Just to keep in mind, the use zones for normal swings are two times the neight of the top post.
