Volunteer Inspections
Posted: 07 May 07 12:44 PM

The local high school requires that students contribute a minimum number of volunteer hours to the community before they can graduate, and we're thinking of routine playground inspections as an opportunity for us and them.  Does anyone have experience using high school students in this kind of role? Pros? Cons? Any thoughts on reliability and/or accuracy?

Thanks!

If the inspections are considered 'informal' and outside of the normal risk management program - they would be beneficial.  There is specific training and certification (CPSI) needed for formal audits.

Anyone can walk through a playground help with the following:

  • Trash
  • Foreign Debris in the Surfacing
  • Raking loose fill surfacing back to level
  • Checking for any broken or damaged parts
  • Checking for loose hardware

If loose fill surfacing is used in the play area it has to be periodically replentished.  This would be a great volunteer project.

I used to be a director of volunteers at a Nursing home.  The students could be a big help.  I would think this would be a good job, but make sure you put "meat" on the opportunity.  These students can do a lot.  Can they inspect and enhance?  Perhaps they can document the inspections and then present needs and solutions to any problems.  They can organize a project to build enhancements, like seating, trash containers, planters.  Make any inspection work as detailed and responsible as possible.  Have them keep a log, use official forms and report details.
