Need recommendations for Inexpensive but safe school playground

I am only entering the ground floor of trying to get a playground at a public school site.  I have done a lot of online research on my own but could use the help of the more experienced Kaboom users.  The city in CT is in the middle of rebuilding the elementary schools. ....

Design Day idea
Posted: 04 Jun 07 9:09 AM
We're having our design day next Saturday and came up with an idea to make it more fun.  Some may already have done it.  We have sidewalks around the play area and we plan to have the kids draw their dream playground with colored chalk on the sidewalks.  Should be good for media pictures as well.

This could be a great way to keep kids busy on build day, too. Instead of them hanging on the fences watching the playground get built, we could give them sidewalk chalk and let them draw "dream playgrounds".

I think this  is a great idea.  It is great way to make the process more active as well.  We have yet to have our design day but we may give this a try.

Our design Day is today,.  I'll try to get some photos and post them, and let you know how it goes.

How did the design day go?  I attended one when we built with a YMCA daycare center.  The kids gave great ideas.  When we built they had their own hard hats and "playground foremen" t-shirts.  That worked nicely.

Design Day went well- in retrospect I'd say have multiple ways for kids to give input.  Some drew with chalk on the walks, others prefered drawing on paper and others preferred looking at play equipment books and talking about what they liked.  Others told us stories about playgrounds they liked and what they liked about them.  Different kids communicate bes tin different ways would be my guess, so have numerous ways they can communicate their desires.

Sorry, we had to temporarily close access to the photos- didn't know we're required to have parental permission before posting children's pictures.  Sorta makes sense though.  I'll post again when things are open again.

That's a very cute idea. In the Kaboom tool kit they gave fun ideas on games that the kids played at our design day- they loved it. We also had kids voting. We had 6 areas where the kids could vote between 2 options of play equipment. We had them bring pennies to vote so we raised a little money as they cast their votes.

Flowrbill1952 (or anyone else out there . . .), do you know exactly what the rules are about requiring permission for photos?  So we have a little newsletter, it's just a neighborhood thing, and we put kids photos in from things like soccer games at one of our parks - it's a pretty distant shot, I don't know if anyone could even identify any of the kids; anoher time recently we had a story about tennis lessons at another park and we put a photo in of the kids practicing - should we be getting permission for all this?  Wow, we'd really have to re-think how we go about this!  But thanks, I'm looking forward to what people have to say about this.

I believe that as long as you are not using the photos for marketing purposes you should be all right.  Posting pictures on websites and in newsletters should not require any type of photo waiver, however it is definitely best to check with a lawyer friend on the specifics. As always, it's better to be safe rather than sorry, so it would be a good idea to get parents to sign off.

Don't think it's the law here, just a City policy.  Still waiting for permission for the photos so that part of our web site is still not up.

Another idea for the kids to display their dream playground is us lego's. We recently had a school build an entire playground out of lego's. It was amazing to see it in 3-D, also allow several kids work together and share ideas. In the end they put it on display in the front office of their school for all to see.
