Has anyone ever constructed a ball wall? Do you have plans, a vendor, or any tips/recommendations?

I'm going to ask a stupid question. What's a ball wall? When I was a kid, I used to throw balls up against the side of a building. Is that what you mean?

Yes, exactly. I'm building in a community park that doesn't have any structures/buildings/walls nearby, but they are very intersted in putting in a wall for kids to play handball or some other sort of "ball wall" games on. I'm worried that a simple plywood wall attached to 4x4 posts is going to be too weak.

There are various ways of doing a ball wall that would reinforce the wall and make it stronger for the people playing. One way is to use the 3/4" plywood for the wall instead of the thinner pieces. When attaching the plywood to the 4x4s, take 2x4s and nail those to the 4x4s at 35 degree angles and then concrete those into the ground as well so that they are supporting the 4x4s. Does this make sense at all? You can also take 2x4s and run those across the back of the plywood before attaching it to the 4x4 to reinforce the plywood for the balls. Good luck!

I recently had a community that really wanted a wall ball wall and I had no idea how to make it so it was fairly inexpensive and volunteer friendly for build day. We came up with a pretty solid design. We dug 4 2 foot holes in the ground and concreted 6x6x10s as the posts. We then used 2x10x12s and sandwiched the 6x6s on both sides with 2x10s and we put one 2x10 at the top to close off the gap. Then we put plywood over the 2x6s, to enforce it. We primed all the wood and painted it with bright pictures so it looked awesome! It was very secure in the ground and the community was so thrilled to finally have a wall ball wall for their kids.
