Registration and Recruitment
Posted: 25 Feb 08 2:01 PM
I am a pre-k teacher in Wilmington, NC. Our school is in the early stages of planning for our new playground with a build date of April 26, 2008. I am co-chair of the registration and recruitment team at our schhol. We were asked to share a few ideas in the forums from our project manager. We have put up 2 posters at our school; one for volunteers and the other for tools. After only 2 weeks our tool chart is nearly completely full. The volunteers poster was put up on Thursday of last week and the spaces are filling quickly. We are not working on a letter to go to the local high schools, college, and university service clubs and organizations to secure volunteers. These ideas aare working well for us and hope that others may be able to profit from them as well. LMH

Hi LMH and thanks for sharing.  What kind of information did you put in the flyer?  Anything like pictures/playground design to get people excited?

LMH, that's awesome to hear and I hope people read your post.  It really is great when it works so well.  Flyers/posters are easy to make and can obviously reap tremendous benefits.  Sign-up sheets are great because it commits people more rather than just a generic informational flyer.  If you are posting fliers, be sure to include contact info such as a phone number so people can find out more.  You can also direct them to a webpage, which is fantastic if you have a one for the project.  Kaboom.org has a resource that allows you to create a webpage for your project.  I highly recommend looking into this as a way to recruit volunteers as well.  Of course, the old fashioned personal approach is often still the best.  Think of big organizations in your community and pay them a visit!  And don't forget to bring something to capture their attention like a picture of the future playground, a picture of the run-down current playground (or perhaps no playground at all!), or letters the kids wrote wishing for a new playground.  It may be sappy but it can work!
