Check before you DIG!
Posted: 30 Apr 08 10:02 AM

If you are putting up a post and platform playground that requires you to dig holes 2 ft or more into the ground be sure check on a few things first!

1) Make sure that all public and private water, gas, sewage and utility lines have been marked on your site.

2) Make sure that you have the proper authorization to be digging on your site.  For example: if your area requires you to have a ticket in hand and utility extension done 48 hrs prior to digging.  Not all areas require this, be sure to check if yours does.

3) If any line is hit shut the bobcat or digging machine off - DO NOT pull the auger bit out of the ground until the line has been shut off and the area is safe and clear.

4)  If you hit any line after it has been turned off, repair what is necessary before you continue digging so that when you turn the line back on it does not harm your holes in your site any more.

HAPPY DIGGING!

This is a great list of things to check for before you dig! I was on a build last week and the utility company had come twice to mark the lines and we were all set to dig, however, we ended up hitting a gas line in the middle of the site that had never been marked.  We had a good evacuation plan in place and everyone evacuated the site until the fire department and the gas company came out.  They were able to fix the break in the line, no one was hurt and we were able to finish digging the rest of the holes.  My advice would be to try to get maps of utilites before the companies come so in case they miss something you might be able to catch a mistake like that before it is too late.  We also ended up using a sonotube in the hole where the gas line was so that it did not get any concrete on it.  Good Luck!
