Can anyone tell me how the depth of compressed wood mulch is measured?  I have checked in the ASTM and I know how thick it should be.  Do we just dig a bunch of holes and use a ruler?  Tim ....

Templates for hopscotch, etc.???
Posted: 03 Jun 08 1:54 AM
I've "Goggled" templates for hopscotch, 4-square, and other games for our school's concrete surface on the playground.  I can't believe how expensive these things are!!!  Is there a website out there with reasonable prices for templates?  Thanks.

How about free? Is that a reasonable price? Ha!

Ellejae, you need to check out the KaBOOM! Side Projects section of our website. We have a cornucopia of different elements you can add to a playground to make it more of a community center and more importantly, more fun.

For hopscotch and other games, visit the Asphalt Games page and download our instructions on how to prepare and paint cement for hopscotch.

While it doesn't provide a template that you can lay down and simply paint over, it has some great pictures of asphalt games that were "hand-made" at KaBOOM! builds.

Let us all know if this helps Ellejae. If you can, post the websites where you found some of the templates. I'd like to see how expensive they are myself. Wouldn't it just be a big stencil? How expensive are stencils?

We have a book called "The Daring Book for Girls" by Andrea J. Buchanan, it is a really fun book and it has pictures of different types of hopscotch courts in it.  It has 4 versions of the traditional hopscotch, old fashioned courts, a monte carlo and italian version, a toss and reach hopscotch and an agility hopscotch.   My girls have had fun drawing them on our driveway,  they really love the snail one.  In the book it goes up to 30.

Wow, folks have posted some great resources here already! From my personal experience I would say that a little bit of  blue painter's tape goes a long way. Templates are nice for a certain effect but if you are involving kids in the painting process, having a bit of irregularity to the design reasserts their personal input and gives the game a more personal feel. It really depends on the aesthetic and impact you are looking for. Good luck!

I encourage anyone who has completed asphalt games to post their photos online and share!
And if you haven't yet, definitely check out the side project installs for Asphalt Games in the Toolkit section of the website for great general tips!
