Can anyone tell me how the depth of compressed wood mulch is measured?  I have checked in the ASTM and I know how thick it should be.  Do we just dig a bunch of holes and use a ruler?  Tim ....

I have soem good news, the mayor called me today and this playplace ould be on its way. I have to attend a meeting on Tuesday for the Town board to talk about it. I just am not sure what the next step after that is going to be. If anyone has any information I would really like the help.

Hi Sammy,

That is GREAT news! Congratulations on getting this on the mayor's agenda. Can you tell me more about how far you are in the planning process and what information you have already provided to the Mayor? For example, have you researched the cost of an accessible playground and what vendors are available? Do you have a timeline and fundraising plan?

Give us some more detail and then maybe we can help out with your next steps. Again, great work.

Leslie

Yes, I have a couple working on the design and they have gave me an estimated cost. I have not yet moved forward with the vendors or timeline. I have not spoken to the mayor about anything other than he will see what he can do about the playground.

Hi Sammy,

I am replying in the original thread (I posted your follow-up too), so other people can follow our conversation and maybe chime in.

It sounds like you have a really good start. I would be prepared to answer questions about why this playground matters to the community (there is information in the KaBOOM.org reference library on "why play matters").

Also, be prepared to talk about the actual playspace and the cost, how you plan to raise money, the use of volunteers and how they can bring the community together. The KaBOOM toolkit online may be especially helpful.

Also check out the Success Stories in the reference library for information on other communities who have built playgrounds!

My best advice to you is to prepare a list of possible questions the council may ask you and the answers. Also, just be confident and passionate about your project.

In play,
Leslie

Way to go, Sammy!  Congratulations on your playground being one step closer to complete.  I would also suggest that you think about the reasons you would like the playground to be accessible for visitors of all different abilities.  Including things like ramps and accessible surfacing is very important, but since they're a little more expensive than other playground items, sometimes they get cut from the plans.  Take a look at the featured accessible playgrounds on KaBOOM!'s Accessibility pages to get some ideas of what makes a playground truly fun for everyone.  Keep encouraging others working on the project to give it a Universal Design, meaning that it is easy to use by all different kinds of people.

Good luck - it's great to see such a young person make such a big difference in their community!
