I just finished working with the amazing Bale Elementary in Little Rock, Arkansas. The group of teachers, parents, and staff implemented service learning throughout the entire project and truly taught their students about giving back. Here are some ideas that you may find helpful to get youth interested:

- Casual for a Cause- an initiative to raise money that allowed kids a "school uniform holiday" on Friday if they brought in $1. They raised over $600 during the planning process.

- Every class did a project to decorate the hallway and thank and welcome the volunteers. They did this for both Design Day AND Build Week

- A group of kids were included in the maintenance plan and will help with upkeep, bolt tightening, trash pick-up, and to ensure proper safety surfacing levels.

- The speech therapist brought her students out to teach and practice words like: circular saw, wheelbarrow, and safety glasses.

- Every class also came out to write stories about what they saw, watch, or simply thank volunteers. They had the back door of the school open and kids came out to ask questions and interact with the volunteers.

- After the build they wrote thank you letters to all the organization and companies that made donations.

- And they also had a few 5th grade boys who helped on prep day with landscaping and picking up trash.

- After the build the principal also asked every class to GIVE BACK in some way since they were so blessed to be on the receiving end of this project. One class has agreed to clean up the cafeteria of all trash each morning after breakfast before going to class, one class is going to make cards for the veterans at the VA hospital and so far one class has agreed to pick up trash on the playground.
