Can anyone tell me how the depth of compressed wood mulch is measured?  I have checked in the ASTM and I know how thick it should be.  Do we just dig a bunch of holes and use a ruler?  Tim ....

We are doing our build at the community center we work at and want to get our youth involved as much as possible in the whole process. Does anyone have any creative, fun fundraising ideas that would be easy for a wide range of youth to participate in? Any ideas would be a great help!

How old are the kids?  One thing that I am working on right now is getting some merchandise/memorabilia from a local band, MxPx, and then we will do an ebay auction starting on the release date of their new album, July 17th, and so if you can utilize the youth at the community center to write letters to the managers or the record label, or through their favorite bands "official websites", then they might be able to obtain these items.  Another suggestion would be to have them organize a talent show, or comedy night, or get a local band to do a benefit concert.  If they are old enough, another one would be a neighborhood "mow your lawn" day, i.e. distribute fliers in a large neighborhood and advertise that your crew of teens will be there on X day, ready to mow lawns for a donation (minimum donation of $ X, but more will be accepted because all proceeds go towards our playground)... then have a way for the homeowners to signal that yes, they want their lawn mowed--either give them a brightly colored flier and instruct them to tape it to their front window to signal the lawn-mowing crew.

If the kids are younger (i.e. not teens) let us know and we can brainstorm other ideas...

These are some great original ideas! We have both middle school and elementary aged kids who come to our center.

An idea that we received, but have not utilized yet is to have the kids make handprints in cement and use them as pavers near or around your facility.  An event is held where area residents can come and put there hands in concrete for whatever price you choose (prices ranged from $5 to $15).  Several paver molds are needed to make the project move along smoothly.  You can find them at craft stores or places like Home Depot.  A neighboring community did this and the kids had a great time.  They sold theirs for $15 and raised over $1500.  A lot of the kids ended up buying a paver for themselves.

One of the big challenges we have faced involving both children and adults in the fundraising is that there are so many competing activities, particularly sports. Many of these games are held at the school, so we have tried to kill two birds with one stone. The kids and parents are already there, so selling basic concessions is an easy and very lucrative way to raise funds consistently without having to worry about schedule conflicts.

Our childcare facility decorated gallon milk jugs and every Friday during Circle Time, we ask the students if they brought "Change for the Playground".  Our project is complete and this fundraiser brought a little over $100.  Not much, but it did get the students involved.
