Can anyone tell me how the depth of compressed wood mulch is measured?  I have checked in the ASTM and I know how thick it should be.  Do we just dig a bunch of holes and use a ruler?  Tim ....

We have sent many fundraising letters out with very little response.  Whats the best way to approach local businesses and get them involved?

I did a creative eye catching letter, and even with that, it still did not bring in a lot of money... the letters that "worked" did so mainly because an employee worked at that company with children, attending our school, and they brought the letter to the attention of their business "charity" person, i.e. I do think that a lot of organizations out there DO have "community involvement" liaisons, and so forth, but in order to access these funds, the best way to do it is to visit with them in-person, or have someone that you know who works there, give the pitch for you.  When we did our coin drive, we made more money by offering our "corporate matching grants" than our "letters" did because either I did an in-person contact or a parent in our school did...plus, the idea of the matching grants seemed like a novel idea to these businesses as a chance to "double their money", i.e. let their donation double in size and do twice as much good!

Whenever possible, get that personal connection by having an employee of the company do the pitch for you because I did hear a lot of "no's", i.e. " we've already made our donations for this year..." or "our donation fund is at zero right now, so we can't help you..."   When you've got that person who works for the company making the pitch, it seems to mean more to those holding the purse-strings to help you out.

At a KaBOOM! led Design Day, we have what we call an asset mapping activity which is a great way to find the people that merrywbee is talking about. Basically we pass out a worksheet that has the different committee teams" that we use on our planning committee: resources and fundraising, food, recruitment and registration, construction, logistics, safety and maintenance, youth activities, and public relations. Everyone then splits up in to small groups and brainstorms what resources they have at their personal disposal. From there we try to get everyone to think about neighbors, friends, cousins, brothers, and that one guy - your brother's girlfriend's father's friend from two towns away - that has a soft spot for kids and works at the local deli. We try to go through each individual there and think about what kind of network we can build. Lots of times people forget that they have these connections until you run through this activity.  If you have our KaBOOM! toolkit, check out the A to Z community Resources and Assets handbook, as it has even more detailed information!

We've found it easier to get donations of goods and services rather than $$. We also found the direct, in-person approach works best and that you need to be as specific as you can in terms of what you need. For instance, I went to a local bakery/cafe with a letter briefly outlining what we're doing and what we needed, and talked to the store manager. It resulted in a donation of bagels and muffins for the mornings of our site prep and build days. Make a list of exactly what you need and use the asset map process to determine where you can get it and then go for it. Good luck.
