The first time -- well, the first 10 times -- I had to ask someone for money, I was so nervous that my voice shook and my stomach churned like a volcano. It got easier, though. There really are a lot of nice people out there. You'll run across both, but in my experience, there are more nice people in this world than mean people.
If you just can't do it, find someone who loves to socialize and who doesn't mind fundraising. Focus your efforts on recruiting that person and then let him or her do this for you.
Another way to do this is to sell something or set up an event. It feels a lot less like asking for money if people walk away with some thing (or having had a fun afternoon or evening). There are a bunch of ideas here:
