What is WE Play!?

The KaBOOM! Workshops Entirely on Play (WE Play!) are one-day regional trainings that provide everything you need to know on planning playspace projects. These fun-filled (can you say "kazoo"?), action-packed trainings use the KaBOOM! Community Build Road Map as a framework for building great places to play. A few of the topics we cover are playground safety, surfacing, design, fundraising, and Build Day preparation. Participants represent a variety of organizations, including YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, parks and recreation departments, schools, churches, and neighborhood associations. What’s more exciting? All participants have the opportunity to volunteer at a local playground build the next day. In other words, you’ll come ready to learn and leave ready to play (and plan)!

What is a webinar?

Short for web-based seminar, a webinar is an online presentation or seminar with interactive elements — the ability to give, receive and discuss information. In a webinar, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants on the Internet. The presenter speaks over a standard telephone line, pointing out information being presented on screen, and the audience can respond over their own telephones or over an online chat.

KaBOOM! holds two to three webinars each month that cover topics ranging from our community-build model to fundraising to innovative side projects. To participate, all you need are a phone and an Internet connection. The sessions generally last 45-60 minutes each. Check out the schedule of all upcoming webinars and archives.

We Play locations

Can you tell me how you pick the locations for these trainings?  Is there any chance of you coming to the midwest any time in the next year?  The nearest one that I have found to us is all the way in Wisconsin, several hours from us.  I attended UPlay in New Orleans, and I loved it!  I learned so much and was so pumped!  I want some of the other members of our group to be able to experience it, too.

Hi Julie, thanks for asking! There are a lot of factors that go into the decision of where to locate the WE Play! trainings. This year, we are doing 7 of them, and so they are pretty scattered out - New England (NH), Southeast (GA), upper Midwest (WI), Rocky Mountain (UT), West coast, southern (LA), Pacific Northwest (OR), and eastern part of Midwest, or western part of the East, depending on perspective (Pittsburgh).

Given the limited number of locations over a year, we also try to balance having them in large population centers where there is a critical mass of interested people within driving distance, with also trying to have certain locations that are selected by coming to a geographical area regardless of size.

In addition to the spread of locations, we try now to always add a build onto WE Play!, and in that regard we need to ccoordinate location and timing of WE Play! with our advance build schedule.

More and more, we are also looking for viable potential funding partners. We love having the WE Play! free, but in order to sdo that, we need to secure foundation funding for at least part of them, and that does play a role, as most foundations we work with have specific geographic interests.

We also like to hear from people like you, and want to encourage others to make the case for their favorite locations.

Thanks again!

Dennis
