Design Day in Pass Christian, 2/17/2006
Project Manager Jenna Peplowski writes: "Design Day in Pass Christian was awesome! First of all, though, I would be wrong not to mention how shocking the landscape is in Pass Christian. Granted, this was my first trip to the gulf since the hurricane, but they Pass Christian was hit really hard. They are still in tents, trailers and FEMA villages and can count the number of working restrooms on one hand. They still have nothing. The houses are still in desperate need of demolition, debris is still everywhere. Literally, that is all there is. It was really, really shocking and unbelievable. I am so amazed by these women, men, families who are still there, trying to better things and continue their lives. They are amazing. The elementary school where we met is the only functional school in the area so all children attend this school. At Design Day we met with a few students from each grade for a total of 22 kids. They were incredible! So excited! A number of them came to our meeting with lists in their hands of what they wanted. One boy actually brought a large black sheet, covered front and back with his pictures and ideas. They were great, full of ideas, eager to share, and just so excited! We also had seven associates from The Home Depot (wow!). They came from the Gulfport and Biloxi stores. They were awesome!! Both store managers were there (and Team Depot captain) and said that even though they're busy and understaffed, they are so excited about this and always ready to give back and help rebuild the area. So they are great and will find ways to sit on committees and have as many associates as possible join our planning calls. There were also thirteen adults for the entire meeting. There were residents, members of the Parks and Rec Committee through the school, a teacher and a couple women from Bridging the Gulf. They are so fired up! They really are a great group! The site is going to see an amazing transformation. They've already preliminarily cleared the area. They have done a lot of work in this specific area to clean up, add soil and level it out. You can see the ocean from the playground. It is so cool! It was just an amazing day. We can't wait for Build Day!"
